Melissa Smedley was raised in Denver, Colorado and comes from a pioneer family. She is an artist, writer and educator currently based in Salinas, California. Whether designing sculptures, inventing performances, blogging, or teaching, her goal is to engage art through the performance of everyday life. Smedley has been the recipient of several public art commissions and her work has been exhibited in museums and non-commercial galleries. She received her undergraduate education at Brown University, and continued with her MFA at The University of California, San Diego in 1993. In between, she attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Smedley has been an educator for sixteen years and presently serves as a lecturer in the Visual and Public Art Department where she teaches studio courses. She also teaches in the First Year Seminar program.
